Lewis Askey was once again imperious as he followed up his victories in London and the Isle of Man with another at the more local Shrewsbury circuit on Saturday. Conditions can best be described as atrocious with heavy rain, cold and a strong wind tested the riders but Lewis took it all in his stride. Setting the early pace in the under 12 race most of the field were struggling to hang on and when he kicked early for home no one had an answer leaving him to cross the line ahead of the rest.

The rest of the Lichfield ccc riders, supported by Zipvit sport, fared less well beset, in the main, by misfortune. Riding with Lewis, Dan Cooper was having a challenging time in the bunch as some of the riding left a lot to be desired. Having been forced off the circuit onto the grass a couple of times, which Also included a close encounter with a lamp post, Dan found himself toward the back of the field going into the finish.

Hopes were high in the under 14 boys were Harry Yates and Charlie Cox have been riding strongly. However, early on Charlie had trouble with his pedal and cleats so found himself towards the back of the field trying to negotiate the less experienced riders but never made it up to the front. Meanwhile Harry Yates had once again taken up his usual position amongst the front runners and was looking good for another podium finish as they went into the last lap all together. Down into the hairpin for the final time one over anxious rider barrelled in far too fast down the inside, losing his front wheel and collecting Harry in the process. In the instance all his hopes were gone and instead of finding himself on the podium it was a bed in A&E. Fortunately his injuries turned out not to be as bad as first thought.

It was now left to the under 16 girls to salvage something from the day. They started in sunshine but it didn’t last and they soon found themselves trying to see where they were going, riding wheel to wheel amidst a deluge. Once again there were crashes and punctures which all three managed to avoid. Phoebe Martin was struggling to see but riding and so riding close to the back of the field. However, as riders were shelled out it was inevitable she would have difficulty maintaining contact from that position. Emily Capewell was riding well but when the pace suddenly increased with just 6 miles to go she found herself on the wrong wheel and also lost contact much to her annoyance. This just left Sophie Capewell to try and rescue something for the girls. She moved herself to the front going into the final laps and was well placed in fourth wheel as they came through the chicane for the final time. As they opend up for the sprint though Sophie’s chain caught between the cassette and frame and with no drive she had to freewheel to the line, slipping down to tenth.

The riders now look forward to the next round, the North West Youth tour in Lancashire, in two weeks time where they hope for better fortune and better weather but continued domination by Lewis Askey.

Apologies for the lack of photo’s but if anyone is in any doubt of what these youngsters put themselves through, please take a look at the following.
