National Trophy Round 1

T1Today was the 1st round of the National Trophy series at Derby. We practiced on the course yesterday which was quite dry, however for my race this morning, it was much more muddy and slippy. I missed my pedal on the start but still got away well and tried to push on a bit on the first lap. I slipped on an off camber section and got caught in the tape which lost me some places. I couldn’t seem to get back to the leaders but was holding the same gap. On the last lap I had just gone past the entrance to the pits when a spoke broke in my wheel and after looking at the problem, I knew it was not rideable so I would have to run the half lap to get to the pits but lots of people were calling from the pits for me to come in so I turned around and went back to the pits to swap to the spare bike. I thought that would be illegal but you are allowed to go back to the pits as long as you haven’t gone further than the exit to the pits, so I learned something from the race and was lucky not to have to run with the bike. On the last corner I crashed onto the tarmac which was annoying and finished 9th. I was disappointed with the result but am looking forward to the next rounds of the series.

Tomorrow I am going to Switzerland to take part in a cyclocross training camp at the UCI headquarters in Aigle. I was nominated by BC and the camp will have riders from across the world and the coaches are Sven Nys and Vanthourenhout. The camp finishes next Sunday with a race so I am so excited for this week and know I will learn a lot from it.
