National Trophy Final Round

Race report from supported rider Matthew Kingston

m1 Matthew Kingston – Race Report
Sunday 7th January 2018 Ipswich Round 6 of National Series
Sunday was the last round of the National Series in Ipswich. I was 11th in the series rankings and pleased with that as my goal at the start of the season was top 15, and hoping to finish strongly with a top 10. I knew this would be tough as there was a strong line up.
We travelled down to Ipswich on the Saturday so I had practice time in the afternoon and then again on the Sunday morning. It was fast and dry which suited me and I felt good and confident about the course ahead of the race.
I was gridded second row but didn’t get a great start slipping to around 17th I think, but then was able to move up taking advantage of the shelter from the strong crosswind as the front of the race sat up slightly.
By the end of the first lap I was 10th and in a group of 3 riders. We rode well together and caught a couple of riders so I was now fighting for 7th.
With one and a half laps to go I had a crash with another rider which meant that 7th place got away from us both. I pushed on really hard into the headwind but then got overtaken in the technical section and just couldn’t get back to his wheel, finishing 9th.
I was really happy with this as it was my best National Cyclocross result so far, and I really enjoyed the race.
Looking forward now to the final race of the season, the National Champs up in Durham next Saturday.
