Here is my report from the national champs in Hetton from last weekend.

At the weekend I competed in the biggest and last race of my season at the national championships in Hetton. On Saturday morning I rode the course and loved it, it had muddy sections, technical sections, a steep run up, power sections and obstacles such as hurdles and a bridge. It wasn’t very muddy but it was very slippery. I raced at 1 o’clock on Saturday so the course hadn’t really changed since my practice laps in the morning by the time of my race. I got an okay start but then for the first half lap which was a very tough section with a long steep drag I was going backward through the field to about 11th because I had absolutely nothing in my legs to go any faster. After the first half lap I managed to get stronger legs and work my way back through the field but the race had already started to split and gaps were being made. I got back into 4th and was with the rider in 3rd but then I crashed and he got about a 15 second gap on me due to this with one lap to go. I was still not too far away and the gap to the riders behind was only about 10 seconds so I kept pushing on hard but I couldn’t catch the rider in front of me so finished in 4th position. I’m really happy with this result and it’s finished off a fantastic season. The race was made even better because Lichfield CCC won the under 16 boys team prize! I’ve really enjoyed this season and I’ve done new things such as racing cyclo cross abroad for the first time which was a brilliant experience.
