Race report from supported rider Toby Barnes
The first round of the West Midlands cyclocross league was held at Abbey stadium, Redditch. It was very similar to last year with lots of corners, off-camber banks, logs and a few fast straights. It was really dry, even after some rain on Saturday, so was going to be a really fast race. As I moved up to under 23 this season I was gridded on the 2nd row. By the first corner I managed to move up to 2nd and stayed with the leader for about a minute until we got to the logs. I bunny hopped them and he didn’t, meaning I could get a gap so decided to attack. I opened up a gap on the first lap to someone who had moved through the field into 2nd. The gap stayed at around 15 seconds for the first half of the race. It then started to open out a bit but I kept pushing on full gas. I managed to push on more for the last lap and finished over 30 seconds ahead after about 55 minutes of racing. I’m really happy to have got the win in my first race of the season and I can’t wait for more races where I can test myself on different types of courses.
