Race report from supported ride Toby Barnes

Yesterday was the 3rd round of the National Trophy in Crawley.  It was a fantastic course and the rainy weather had made the course even more exciting with really slippy and muddy parts.  There were really steep bankings, 40cm steps, switch backs, hurdles, run ups and off camber banks. I was gridded on the 2nd row and was around 15th by the first corner. I moved up on the next few corners so was in the top 10 going into the first technical section. I moved up a couple of places when remounting after the run-up and was just at the back of the lead 6 riders. The front 6 broke away so I was with 1 other rider for a bit then he dropped off my wheel after the hurdles so I pushed on a bit. I made sure not to go into the red too early on so didn’t go too hard and rode at a pace I knew I could hold. 2 riders then slowly caught me and I joined them for a lap. We then all split up and the gaps slowly grew. A Belgian Telenet Fidea rider ahead of me had a small problem so I caught him and went straight past. The gap then opened up a bit and I was pulling away from him. I kept the gap so finished in 7th elite, 3rd u23. I’m really pleased with the race as I felt really good throughout and didn’t make many mistakes meaning I could be right up there overall. I’m now 2nd overall in the u23 series and only 3 points off 1st so will be fighting for the leader’s jersey at the next round in York.
