The European Cyclo Cross Championships last weekend had three riders with strong Lichfield roots in the U23 race – Toby and Dan Barnes and Lewis Askey.

We offered some support to Toby and Dan given the extra costs incurred associated with Covid and they have provided a report for us.

On Thursday we travelled out to the Netherlands for the European cyclocross championships, ready for the race on Saturday. After course practice on Friday we were both really looking forward to racing on the really fast, twisty and technical course. Thank you very much to Lichfield CCC for supporting us for this trip, we’re both very grateful the support.

We’ve both done a small summary of how our races went:

Toby – I had a brilliant start, moving up into the top 10 after starting from the 3rd row and was pushing really hard to stay with the leaders as long as I could. After the first lap I was in a group racing for 7th position and managed to hold onto the group for a few laps. Towards the end of the race the group was splitting up a bit and I couldn’t quite stay with the pace, finishing 13th. I’m really happy with that result and it was a great experience racing at the front of a race of that level.

Daniel – Racing the under 23 European Champs was a massive step up for me as my first international race as an under 23. I was delighted to be selected to represent GB at the event and really excited to see what I could do in the race.  I have raced the course before as a junior in 2018 and loved it both years, super fast, technical and fun to ride.  I was gridded at the back with no UCI points and got held up quite a bit at the start but then I started to move up around the first lap, I was in the top 25 but then crashed towards the end of lap 1. Annoyingly this lost me quite a few places and it was really hard to move up after this in such a fast course.  I kept going full gas all the way to the end of the race after having a few battles with some other riders, I finished 31st.  This was definitely a valuable experience, and hopefully can help me in more international races in the future.

British results – Thomas Mein 2nd, Cameron Mason 3rd Toby Barnes 13th, Lewis Askey in 16th, Rory McGuire in 19th, Oli Stockwell was 29th, Dan Barnes was 31st and Tom Couzens was 35th.
