About
Lichfield City Cycle Club: Developing Champions, Inspiring Communities
Founded in the 1890s, Lichfield City Cycle Club (LCCC) held their first club race at the Lichfield Athletic Club sports meeting on 25th July 1891 and has been at the heart of cycling in Staffordshire, providing opportunities for riders of every age and ability—from complete beginners taking their first pedal strokes to athletes competing on the world stage.
With a reputation built on inclusivity, excellence and a genuine passion for cycling, the club has become one of the Midlands’ leading cycling organisations, offering everything from relaxed social rides to structured coaching and competitive racing.
A Club for Everyone
The Club was reborn in the 1990s after a meeting between John Cuthbert and Rob Satherly, the two developed its core ethos, Lichfield City Cycle Club is about making cycling enjoyable and accessible.
Whether your goal is to improve fitness, meet like-minded people, gain confidence on the bike or compete at the highest level, the club provides a welcoming environment where every rider can thrive.
New members are warmly welcomed by experienced club riders, who ensure newcomers quickly feel part of the club and enjoy their first rides in a supportive atmosphere.
Social Cycling at its Best
Every Saturday morning, riders gather at The Dog Inn, Whittington, for one of the club’s most popular activities—the weekly Café Ride.
Starting at 9:00am, the ride is divided into groups to suit different abilities and speeds, ensuring everyone can enjoy a relaxed ride through Staffordshire’s beautiful countryside before stopping for coffee, brunch and conversation at one of the region’s many cafés.
The weekly ride has become much more than simply riding a bike—it has become a vibrant social community where lifelong friendships are formed. Throughout the summer months, members also enjoy a programme of longer organised rides exploring some of the area’s finest cycling routes.
For riders looking to push themselves further, the club also runs fast-paced Chain Gang and Team Time Trial training sessions, helping members develop speed, fitness and group riding skills in a supportive environment.
Developing the Next Generation
LCCC has earned an enviable reputation for developing young cyclists.
Its qualified coaching team work with children from Under-8 through to Under-16, delivering structured coaching sessions in safe, traffic-free environments that develop fundamental bike handling skills, confidence and a lifelong love of cycling, they are designed to be fun, engaging and progressive, helping young riders develop balance, coordination, teamwork, discipline and resilience—qualities that extend far beyond the bike.
The club believes success is measured not only by race results, but by creating confident young people who enjoy sport for life.
Producing World-Class Talent
The quality of the club’s coaching programme is reflected in the calibre of riders it has produced.
Olympic and World Champion Sophie Capewell MBE began her cycling journey through LCCC’s youth programme before progressing to international success, winning Olympic Gold alongside World Championship honours.
Similarly, Lewis Askey developed through the club before becoming a WorldTour professional, competing in the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España, while achieving victories and titles across road, cyclo-cross, mountain bike and track disciplines.
These achievements demonstrate the club’s ability to nurture talent from grassroots participation through to the very highest level of international cycling.
Year-Round Coaching
Cycling never stops at LCCC.
During the winter months, members enjoy indoor roller training sessions that improve bike handling, balance and technique in a fun and engaging atmosphere. Cyclo-cross coaching introduces riders to off-road racing while building confidence through short training races.
As spring arrives, activity moves to the renowned Curborough Sprint Course, one of the region’s finest traffic-free cycling facilities.
Dedicated sessions for children aged 4–7 provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to cycling, while older children and adults benefit from structured coaching designed to improve confidence, fitness and racing ability.
A Thriving Racing Scene
Lichfield City Cycle Club is also one of the Midlands’ most active race organisers.
The club hosts the popular Neil Lawford Youth Race Series, providing young riders with valuable race experience in a safe and supportive environment. Adult riders also benefit from the club’s popular Non-Frills Racing programme, offering regular, competitive racing for cyclists of all abilities.
These events play an important role in developing cycle sport across Staffordshire while giving riders of every age and experience the opportunity to challenge themselves.
More Than a Cycling Club
Lichfield City Cycle Club is much more than somewhere to ride a bike.
It is a thriving community built around friendship, encouragement and shared experiences. Whether someone joins to enjoy leisurely weekend rides, improve their fitness, introduce their children to cycling or pursue ambitious racing goals, they will find expert coaching, supportive members and opportunities to develop at every stage of their cycling journey.
From first-time riders to Olympians, every cyclist starts somewhere—and at Lichfield City Cycle Club, that journey begins with a warm welcome.
